We understand that becoming a new parent can feel daunting and overwhelming at times, especially when you live far from your immediate family or if your partner travels a lot with work commitments.
As a new parent, you may not know where to look for somebody who will look after your baby in the same way that you would like to, or know what to expect from a Maternity Nurse or Night Nanny or what to do if you find the person you have employed isn’t the right fit for your needs.
Maternity nurses are not medically trained as their title suggests and this is why Lizzie and I felt that it was important to structure our company as we have.
Having worked with thousands of new parents, we know that there is a real need for an agency who:
- Recruits carefully rather than ‘en masse’
- Takes responsibility for training and developing their team
- Supports both parents and girls alike
- Puts ethics and delivering a high standard of care before income
We recruit carefully
We only recruit girls we would feel comfortable having in our homes when we are not feeling our best and need TLC. To ensure we get the best girls we have a 6 step recruitment and vetting process in place. The girls are frequently assessed via phone conversations and training events.
We train and develop our team
To ensure that you don’t get conflicting or incorrect advice, our girls are trained by myself, Geraldine Miskin, for breastfeeding matters and Lizzie for routine and sleep matters. Successful candidates join us for compulsory Hathcling training before being placed with you. They can then continue to climb the ladder to become a Duckling, Duck or fully fledged Mother Duck.
We believe that with the right support and training, night nannies and maternity nurses can provide new families with the care and guidance they need.
We support both parents and girls alike
Once one of our girls are placed with you, we are in regular contact to ensure that things are going well and working for both parties. This ensures that you have our full support and that you have a positive and enjoyable experience.
We don’t expect our girls to have the same level of expertise as ourselves and are therefore in frequent contact to answer their questions as well as yours during their placement. We support them, so that they can support you and if you ever want to chat, we are at the end of the line too.
We put ethics and a high standard of care before income
It is very important to us that you and your baby are cared for properly which is why we recruit carefully, train and support our girls the way we do. Whilst this means that we don’t always have candidates available for last minute placements, we would rather turn work away than place somebody we didn’t know or trust.
We also help smooth out any bumps. You don’t have to deal with any management of our girls – we are happy to handle all conversations for you, which allows you to make changes and give feed back without feeling awkward.
I’m Geraldine Miskin and have been working with families in various roles for more than 20 years and as an independent breastfeeding specialist for 13 years. In that time I’ve undertook several international human lactation courses and developed an algorithm (The Miskin Method) which enables me to give you breastfeeding advice tailored to your unique needs. I live with my husband and 2 furry felines in Surrey and feel privileged to work with new families until my little ones make an appearance.
I’m Lizzie Petersen and have been working in the childcare industry in various capacities for 13 years. I started out as a nanny in New Zealand before embarking on my overseas travels which saw me further my career as a nanny and later making the transition into maternity nursing and troubleshooting before meeting my husband, opening Willow Nannies (my nanny agency) and having two children of my own.
I’ve always had a real love for children so when I first came to the UK I chose to work as a nanny whilst deciding on my career path. During this time, I quickly saw first hand how different, busy, exciting, exhausting life with a new baby could be. Mums were trying to feed their baby whilst juggling, a wife to a tired hard working partner, friend, sister, aunty, daughter, dog walker, cat feeder at the same time, leaving little time or energy for themselves.
What was really clear was that these mums needed somebody to be their support system, somebody to teach them simple easy ways to care for their baby, to make everything a lot easier, and if possible, without even being asked.
Having become a breastfeeding specialist, I now work with new parents everyday and have been able to see that this need still hasn’t been filled.
Did you know that maternity nurses and night nannies aren’t regulated and only have to complete a 2 day course before being placed with families with new babies as experts?
I don’t believe that this is fair on you (the parents) or your new baby, so Lizzie and I got together to create a company that aims to rectify this by how we work.
Having worked as a maternity nurse, opened up two agencies and having become a mother myself, I have a true appreciation of every aspect of this industry and what new parents and a team of maternity nurses look for in an agency.
What I try and deliver is an empathetic and sensitive service, ensuring our high standards are consistently met and that we recruit and build a team that reflects what collectively Geraldine and I feel a team of maternity nurses should hold as well as what this industry needs.
We are truly passionate about working with families and ensuring the care you get from us and our team is an individual one. No two babies are the same, no two family dynamics are the same and therefore have created an agency that listens to your needs and aims to guide, nurture empower new parents.
We inspire our girls to believe that they can make a real difference, be an incredible source of skill/knowledge and raise the benchmark of the level of care new parents experience.
We believe that we have the best girls on our team and have put a lot of work and effort into finding them.
Our team consists of Hatchlings, Ducklings, Ducks and Mother Ducks who are placed as Night Nannies and Maternity Nurses. They are trained to varying levels to provide you with the support you need.
Hatchlings – These are lovely girls who have a lot of child care experience, have done their maternity nurse training and are committed to learning more. They are really fantastic and we believe that they have the skills, personality, passion and dedication to be a valued asset to our growing team.
Ducklings – These girls are qualified maternity nurses who have completed our foundation course. The girls can redo the course as many times as they like, until they have a proper grasp on our key principles (based on the Miskin Method). They have our full support and are closely followed throughout their placement to ensure that you enjoy skilled encouragement.
Ducks – These girls have completed the foundation course and are in the process of working through their advanced *12 month course and practical assessments. They still have our full support but as they are more experienced, we don’t monitor them quite as closely as our Ducklings.
Mother Ducks – These girls have completed their 12 month course and are able to consult on breastfeeding, bottle-feeding and routine challenges without being monitored.
*We sometimes meet girls who are keen learners and advance through their course work quicker than 12 months. In these cases, we ensure that the girls continue meet our extremely high levels of expectation so that you benefit from their extensive training even when completed early.
